Overview

Objective

Developing messaging and branding for a top performing activist investor in Japanese small and midcap companies.

Peregrine worked with Nippon Active Value Fund (NAVF) to develop proposition messaging and full visual branding including the investment trust’s logo and related brand assets.

Our initial aim was to provide NAVF with powerful and distinctive branding and marketing materials to inform investors. With the groundwork in place, we helped NAVF position its concentrated activist approach as a compelling route for British investors seeking diversification beyond the UK and US.

Raising NAVF’s profile

We organised NAVF’s media relations to encourage journalists to cover capital raises and trust acquisitions.

We looked to secure media coverage on several high-profile activist campaigns where NAVF was agitating for governance reform, higher dividends and board changes at select Japanese companies.

Finally, we used LinkedIn to build an audience and grow awareness about NAVF among clients and potential investors.

Results

The website continues to receive increased traffic and now lets investors register to automatically receive the monthly factsheet. The website also features periodic video updates from the investment advisors.

NAVF’s community on LinkedIn has grown organically from a couple of dozen to about 500 followers. This helped facilitate NAVF being voted ‘Best country Specialist’ in the 2025 QuotedData Investor’s Choice Awards.

Media coverage has occurred in leading investment and financial media including The Telegraph Questor column, The Times, Midas column (Mail on Sunday), Citywire, Investor’s Chronicle, Reuters and Bloomberg plus podcasts including Money Makers and Armchair Trader.

Brand & digital presence

The activist nature of the investor and its deep experience and focus on Japanese midcap companies led to the selection of a strong red accent colour and the classical serif logomark composition.

It also inspired the visual concept capturing the illustration style of Edo period woodblock prints, specifically showing famous British frigates that engaged in commercial activity in Japan. This conveyed a classic style and the company’s deep experience in the Japanese market.

Our follow-on objective was to drive awareness of NAVF through high impact media relations with key investment media.

This led to upgrading NAVF’s LinkedIn homepage, investor materials (investor decks, factsheets) along with NAVF’s website and posting periodic updates about its investment strategy and performance.
